Further back, Canadian Nicholas Latifi, the sole rookie, will finally makes his F1 debut with former champions Williams.

Williams, last overall in 2019, will be looking to take a big step up with the team potentially for sale and looking for investment. Austrian Grand Prix 2020 Live Streaming: The 2020 Formula One season is all set to start with the first race at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. It will be the first of two races that will be hosted by the circuit on consecutive weekends due to the delayed start to the season owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg is all set to host the opening race of the delayed 2020 F1 season amidst empty stands but the excitement of the Formula One finally returning is certainly building up in Austria.

Austria is hosting back-to-back races as part of an 8-race European swing and no spectators are allowed.

In a surreal atmosphere, with vast and empty grandstands outside, drivers have been holding their news conferences inside sat on chairs two meters apart and with masks on.

Media have no access to the paddock area where the teams are and no direct contact with drivers. Instead, they ask questions via video or by email. All media on site have to be tested for the coronavirus every five days.

On Friday, world champion Lewis Hamilton picked up where he left off on the first day of the Formula One season, setting the fastest times in the first two practices.

The British driver twice finished ahead of his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas on the 4.3-kilometer (2.7-mile) Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg nestled at the foot of the Styrian mountains in southern Austria.

Bottas was .356 seconds behind Hamilton in the damp and overcast morning run and improved to .197 back as the track dried and became warmer in the afternoon. Late in that session, however, he had to return to the pits because of a braking issue.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, winner of the last two races here, was third quickest in the first practice but slipped to eighth in the second session and encountered oversteering problems.

Ferrari struggled for speed in the morning with Charles Leclerc 10th quickest and Sebastian Vettel only 12th, but improved in the afternoon with Vettel pushing up to fourth behind Sergio Perez in third. Perez’s Racing Point team uses Mercedes engines.

Although Vettel showed good cornering speed, he was still a somewhat distant .657 seconds adrift of Hamilton’s time in the second session.

Watch F1 live in the USA and other regions on F1 TV. RaceFans readers in the USA, Mexico, Germany, France, Belgium and dozens of other Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix 2020 (11.10 pm EST) — Almost four months after teams abandoned the Australian Grand Prix, the 2020 Formula One season finally gets underway tonight.
The first in a revised eight-race calendar takes place on Sunday night (11.10pm EST) at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, where Lewis Hamilton’s quest for a Michael Schumacher-equalling seventh world title begins.

He will have to start the race, however, from second on the grid after Mercedes teammate Red Bull driver Max Verstappen — who has won the past two races in Austria — will start in third, while McLaren young gun Lando Norris is a surprise starter in fourth.

Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo starts further back in 10th place after his flying lap in qualifying was hampered by waved yellow flags.

Nonetheless, he’s been impressed with his car’s pace all weekend and is confident of climbing through the field, which Ferrari will also hope to do after a disastrous Saturday.

Charles Leclerc was only quick enough for seventh, while Sebastian Vettel didn’t make Q3 and will start from 11th.

Ricciardo’s teammate, Esteban Ocon, is four places behind Ricciardo in P14. Drivers will make a collective show of their opposition to racism before Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix but may not all take a knee to back the Black Lives Matter campaign.

It is expected that the drivers will all wear t-shirts in support of their stance against racism, but the same unity may not apply for other actions.

Six-time champion Hamilton, an outspoken advocate of the BLM campaign and supporter of equality and diversity, said their reluctance may be due to a lack of understanding of racism.

He said he had explained his viewpoint to his fellow-drivers on Friday, pointing out that silence is “generally complicit”.

“I think it is part of a dialogue of people trying to understand because there are still some who don’t fully understand what is happening and the reason for these protests.

“I continue to try to be that guider and try to influence as many people as I can.” The coronavirus pandemic means the new campaign is starting nearly four months later than planned, under strict health and safety conditions and without spectators.

“Of course, it is going to be very different without the orange army and it’s going to feel a little strange,” said Verstappen.

“I remember looking up at the fans at the end of the race last year and they were all standing up and cheering, it was crazy. It gave me an even bigger smile after the win.

“It’s a shame we don’t have that this year but we will try and put on a good show for everyone watching at home on TV.” The long wait since Melbourne, which should have hosted the curtain-raiser in March, means Red Bull will have an upgraded Honda engine.

Champions Mercedes will also have performance improvements and have changed their livery to black to reinforce the stand against racism and support of six-times world champion Lewis Hamilton’s campaigning voice.

Hamilton, who can equal Michael Schumacher’s record of seven titles and surpass the German’s 91 wins this season, is raring to go even if Spielberg also holds some bad memories.

The 35-year-old is on a record run of 33 successive points finishes but the last time he failed to score was in Austria two years ago. Ferrari, with four-time champion Sebastian Vettel now beginning his last season with the team, had Charles Leclerc on pole last year but testing highlighted problems and led to a design rethink.

In a tight midfield, there will be much interest in Racing Point’s ‘Pink Mercedes’ and whether Renault have upped their game after being overtaken by McLaren.
